The Youth Choir of the Wolgast Grammar School has survived the institutional changes at the school in the last century ever since its foundation in the 1930s. The “Volkslied auf Usedom” was written for the Youth Choir at that early time, and it is still part of their repertoire. Currently pupils from the 7th to the 12th form (aged from around thirteen to around nineteen years) sing together under the direction of Fred Winter. Alongside the introduction to all the different styles of choral repertoire, there is special focus on the development of a healthy and strong voice, and students are introduced to aspects of the physiology of the voice and to choral music right up to the present day. A specialty of the Youth Choir of the Runge-Gymnasium consists of the opportunity for the early training of young talented pupils as choral conductors. Apart from tuition in conducting choirs and aural training, these young people engage with the methodological side of running rehearsals, again the physiology of the voice, and composition.
