Jan Schumacher

has been music director and professor at Goethe University in Frankfurt since 2015 and has been teaching at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt since 2019. From 2011 to 2016 he was professor of choral conducting at the College of Church Music in Rottenburg. He also directs the Camerata Musica Limburg. He studied school music and German language and literature in Mainz, as well as choral conducting with Wolfgang Schäfer in Frankfurt.
With his ensembles he works on a wide repertoire from Gregorian to jazz, from symphonic orchestra to big band and vocal or electronic improvisation. Jan is a welcomed guest on juries and a leader of seminars for choirs, orchestras and conductors in Germany and abroad. This is evidenced by invitations to festivals such as America Cantat, Europa Cantat and Choralies, as well as workshops and lectures at the ACDA National Conference and the IFCM World Symposium. Jan has led conducting courses in Bulgaria, Iceland, Turkey, USA, Venezuela, Argentina, China, the Philippines and Iran.
He is also well known to the German-speaking choral scene as the editor of numerous choral books with the most important choral music publishers (Helbing, Carus, Bärenreiter, Peters).
For many years Jan was a member of the board and the music commission of the European Choral Association. Since 2020 he has been one of the vice-presidents of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM).
